about the mixtape

"Revenge of the Jocks the Mixtape" is a project I created for a podcast of the same name. I recorded all the songs in a single session at Truth Studio in Los Angeles, probably in 2019.

This mixtape was a lot of fun to create. My best friend Dessie jumped on a track, as well as my little sister Ashley and the homie David Allen Dope.

The making of this mixtape was a very playful process. Nothing serious—just went in with an assortment of beats and tried to get as many songs done as I could in an 8-hour session. I managed to complete five tracks. The exercise of trying to maximize studio time by creating the music first and refining it later was how I approached it.

While recording, "Ghostbusters" was playing in the background, so I decided to take scenes from the movie and add them to some of the tracks. This added a unique and fun element to the mixtape, making the process even more enjoyable.

music notes.

Black Walt Disney
The hook for this song was written while daydreaming at Disneyland, wondering if I could have my own theme park. There's a more whimsical version that I imagined for a stage play. My little sister Ashley was living with me at the time, and I got her to join me at the studio because she wanted to make music. I always found space for her to participate in the shenanigans.

Bill Murray
A motivational confessional capturing my thoughts at that exact time in my life. I was living a great life, but there was a bunch of bullshit. We took a vacation to get away, and I wrote this on the plane and in the Airbnb.

Lemonade
One of my favorite songs. Dessie and I have been friends for about 20 years, and we used to work together doing many things. We threw parties, charity events, book tours, made music together, we even created a game show. If you were in Dallas 2008-2012 you knew Marty and Dessie. Wild times indeed. Anyway, Dessie "retired" from the rap game, haha, so whenever I can get him to rap, it's fun. I believe you can hear our friendship in the music.
